Downtown Demonstration Project

The City of Delta received approval from the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT)in early 2022 to install the Main Street Demonstration Project on 1st through 6th blocks on Main Street in Delta, and for Phase 2 from 7th Street to Confluence Street in spring of 2023. See the Project Plans below. This is a test project to make Main Street safer by slowing down and reducing traffic to create safer pedestrian areas. Nothing will become permanent before this new traffic calming pattern is extensively tested through this demonstration project.

In 2023 the City of Delta, in continued partnership with CDOT, will be expanding its efforts to calm traffic on Main Street testing various techniques to reduce speeds, encourage truck traffic to use the bypass, increase pedestrian activity, and above all improve safety.

Some key takeaways from data gathered over 2022-2023

  • Main Street saw an overall increase in traffic in 2022 of 20%
  • Truck traffic on Main Street decreased by 17%
  • Truck traffic on Confluence Drive correspondingly increased by 17%
  • Overall more trucks are using Confluence and more passenger vehicles are using Main.
  • Average speeds have reduced by nearly 10 mph between 2nd and 6th Streets.
  • Sales tax collections from Main Street businesses were up 7.29% in 2022 compared to Citywide sales tax increases of only 1.66%.
  • Most importantly, traffic accidents decreased by 40% in 2022

We will continue to gather data throughout 2023 as the demonstration project is expanded.

For detailed information about Phase 2 of the demonstration project please see the press release, project design and plans, an FAQ sheet, and other related items below.

Thank you to all who have provided input about the Downtown Demonstration Project! We are excited that this project has grabbed the attention of our community as the more input we receive, the more we get to learn about what the community desires for Main Street. We will continue to collect feedback and adjust accordingly.

We are excited to create a safer and more inviting downtown that benefits our community and local businesses!
